Instructions for joining the BasedAF Metathon VR Chat world
First, are you joining via Quest or via desktop?
If desktop then save yourself a load of hassle by answering the question below…
Desktop Users: Are you on a Mac or a PC?
If on a Mac then I’m afraid you won’t be able to join. There is no MAC version of VR Chat. Sucks but that’s the way the cookie frazzes.
If you’re on a PC then you’re in luck!
Continue your journey below and if you’re a Quest user then skip the desktop section and proceed directly to joining via a headset.
Joining with a PC
So there’s a bit of work to do here but it goes fast and all the software is FREE.
We need to:
- Install Steam
- Make a Steam account
- Download VR Chat
- Create a VR Chat account

Steam Installation
Steam is a platform for accessing PC and VR games. This is the correct link https://store.steampowered.com/
It’s free to install on your computer. You’ll see a green box top right which will take you through to the install page. Alternatively, click this link here.
Clicking the INSTALL STEAM button will download the file SteamSetup.exe to your PC. Double click the file once downloaded to install it on your computer.
Follow the instructions and install in your /program folder.
Sign into Steam if you already have an account or click on Create a Free Account to setup a new one. Once your account is setup and confirmed the main Steam storefront will launch.
Use the Search bar to look for VRChat. It isn’t the top search result so make sure you look for the VRChat icon.
Click on VRChat to be taken through to the main product page and look for the Play Now button
Follow the instructions in the pop-up to download the game to your computer.
It shouldn’t take more than a couple of minutes to install. Now when you click on Play Now you will be asked whether to play the Steam VR mode or Desktop (Non-VR) version.
Select the Desktop Mode and click PLAY. You will see a Pop-Up from EasyCheat asking to make changes to your device. It’s okay to approve this. The game will not load if you say NO.
Next you will be taken to a welcome screen and asked to login. You can use the Steam login you just created or create a new account. You’ll have to complete a short tutorial before you can begin the game unfortunately but it doesn’t take long.
When you arrive at the Dashboard, navigate using the icons on the bottom to the Worlds tab.

and VR Chat will launch and you will be able to join the Marathon World.
Otherwise you can search for the name of the world which is BASED METATHON
How to Play on Quest
This is a new build and a new game environment and it’s possible that it simply won’t work well on Quest. We’ve tried to make it feasible there but Quest is necessarily a more limited visual experience so we would recommend using desktop if at all possible.
Here’s a good tutorial on how to get Quest set up on VR chat as both a standalone device or tethered to a PC (as long as you have the Oculus link cable.)
